Applique Quilts

At times, we think that our Amish quilters put all their dreams of a less “plain” life into their gorgeous and often flamboyant appliqued quilts. Even after looking closely at hundreds of Lancaster applique quilts we continue to be amazed by the freshness of design and coloring we see in new quilts. We also see a great diversity in quality of applique quilts and limit ourselves to showing and offering only top quality very well made quilts.

Many of the quilts shown here are marked indicating that they are “available now” for shipment –we are usually able to ship quilts so marked no later than the next business day. Other quilts shown have been sold, but often we are able to find a very similar well-made quilt that can be shipped quickly. Alternatively we can arrange for a similar quilt to be custom made.

It is an original design by C Jean Horst, using needle turn hand appliqué, machine piecing, decorative hand quilting and great 100% quilters cotton fabrics in colors of golds,  plums, greens and neutrals  in a tasteful combination. An amazing design by Lancaster’s renowned designer. Note the abundance of quilting surrounding the focal center applique work. The background fabric are all in shades of neutrals as well as the backing print is in eggshell. Quilted by an Amish friend. Signed and dated by its designer. Copyright pattern — no directions are available. A fine eggshell 100% cotton fabric covers the back of the quilt. The quilting density is very good, averaging about 130 linear inches of stitching per square foot. The stitching is very good with about 9 stitches per inch. The quilt has a small documentation tag sewn into the back side of the quilt documenting the maker, fabric content, date, name of pattern, and a note about being made in America, quilted by an Amish friend. Excellent choice! A high quality quilt.

The watercolor  quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time as a full scale quilt!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in machine appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, machine applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt. The backing of this quilt is covered with a light ivory print fabric of 100% cotton to accent the front side.
