C Jean Horst Quilts

While there are many fine quilt designers in Lancaster, C Jean Horst’s quilt creations stand out from all the others. Her ability to select fabrics is phenomenal, and her willingness to create custom orders is a special talent.

Jean tells how her mother taught her, at the age of five, to use her sewing machine to make doll clothes. She has been sewing ever since. Yet it was on a family vacation much later that she first discovered the creative and colorful world of quilts. In spite of living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the quilt capitol of the world, she purchased her first pattern while on vacation in Tennessee.

Her hobby has now become a meaningful business of 36 years. She works with many ambitious women, who piece, appliqué, mark, quilt, and bind quilts and crib quilts, creating heirlooms for tomorrow and functional art for today. Recently, she has had the privilege of designing and managing some very special projects. Of special note she designed the Governor’s Star – an original quilt for Governor Tom Ridge, and a millennium quilt “It’s About Time” for an American Cancer Society raffle (which raised over $30,000!) as well as doing quilts for a Disney Movie “Utterly Beloved”.

Due to the demand and excessive hand labor in the appliqué process, her original appliqué designs are no longer available as special orders. However, machine pieced, hand quilted quilts still remain available in special orders.

Contact Me I am currently on vacation and products will not be shipped for a few days. Thanks and I'll be back again Oct 13, 2022. Sorry for the delay.

  • What is a Stack and Whack??   It's so fun to do....Here is a quilt making style that uses one fabric and layers the same exact repeat on top of each other 8 times.  The triangles are cut through a floral fabric to make 8 exact pieces which are sewn together for one patch.  As you cut across the fabric for more patches you will be getting many different areas of a large print fabric which turns out to be a surprise every time!  Here this design has a fun zebra print on the binding as well as added to the corners of the patches at various places.  The hand quilting is done well and is 7 stitches per inch.  The backing is a soft blue and yellow print shows on the one photo.  Don't forget to double click on each thumbnail to bring them up to full size and see the uniqueness of each block.  This throw even has a sleeve for hanging already in place so that's a great possibility.

  • The Lone Star quilt is likely one of the most recognizable quilt patterns to Americans.  It is also one of the oldest patterns.  The Amish love the large central star pattern and make their fair share of them.  Its  a beautiful but difficult design to get all the corners meeting at the points of the diamonds.  This is a beautiful example of precision piecing with the use of 12 quilters fabrics for the star. The backing of the quilt is done with a cream solid color fabric and the hand quilting stitches are counted at 8 per inch.  A Beauty of a quilt with the extra quilting designs that show up so lovely on the bed top as well as the side drop.

  • A wonderful quilt that deserves its name! An original quilt pattern by C Jean Horst. Gorgeous white and gray fabrics makes this quilt an extraordinary heirloom. Note around the center bouquet with its tiny little hummers checking out the roses! Excellent hand applique work. An abundance of fine hand quilting. Made in Lancaster. Copyright pattern -- directions unavailable. The quilt backing is a beautiful 100% cotton print oil gray sprigs as shown on one of the thumbnail prints.
  • A WOW of a Wedding or Anniversary Present! Note the interesting collection of 100% cottons in beautiful burgundy and navy prints on ivory selected for this quilt. This amazing quilt will work well for a charming and traditional bedroom statement. Well-pieced and quilted by a Lancaster Amish woman. Signed and dated by its creator, the well respected quilt designer, C Jean Horst of Lancaster. The back of the quilt is covered with a fine 100% cotton beautiful neutral print that coordinates nicely with the top of the quilt. The hand quilting density is good, averaging about 100 linear inches of stitching per square foot. The stitching is very good with about 8 stitches per inch.  It’s fresh but calm look is lovely.
  • Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor  quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time as a full scale quilt!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in hand appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt. The backing of this quilt is covered with a light ivory print fabric of 100% cotton to accent the front side. The documentation label is on the back corner and signed by C Jean Horst in quilter’s pigma pen to save the history. Made in USA  High quality quilt!
