Karel’s Kreations

Karel’s heritage is rich in quilting history with generations of quilters behind her on both sides of her family.  As a young girl her mother taught her how to sew her own clothing which ended up being a great foundation, but it was sleepovers at her Grandma’s, with patient lessons in learning hand embroidery, that contributed to her love of hand sewing.

At the time of her wedding her Grandma taught her step by step how to make a quilt which resulted in her wedding quilt and a passion for the art of quilting was born. Working for many years at a local quilt shop increased her knowledge of quality fabric and quilting techniques.

For 25 years Karel has been creating unique wall quilts and accent pillows to sell locally.  With a love for whimsical design, and combining appliqué with piecing and touches of embroidery, she especially enjoys creating seasonal wall quilts and pillows.

Residing all of her life here in Lancaster County,  she lives with her husband and their little dog.  She loves spending time with her family and being a Grammy. When she’s not sewing you’ll likely find her cooking, gardening, or reading.

  • Patchwork Autumn is an original design by Karel and was created out of her love for the fall season. Hand appliqué hollyhocks, flowers, a goldfinch and pumpkins are surrounded with blocks that include the friendship star, pinwheel, Ohio star and churn dash pattern to name a few. Half square triangles and hourglass blocks add to its charm as well. The border fabric features little flowers in fall colors on a brown background. Beautiful hand quilting and appliqué make this quilt a beauty. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.
  • This was one of Karel's first original designs, the trumpet flower and it continues to be a customer favorite. Winding trumpet flowers, vines and leaves are surrounded by small log cabin blocks and primitive stars in each of the 4 corners. Multi-colored fabrics have been used in warm reproduction fabrics for a vintage look. Karel enjoys incorporating many different prints with color and texture creating interest in her quilts along with the best hand quilting and appliqué to create and heirloom piece. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.
  • The trumpet flower was one of Karel's first original designs and it continues to be a customer favorite. Winding trumpet flowers, vines and leaves are surrounded by small log cabin blocks and primitive stars in each of the 4 corners. Multi-colored fabrics have been used in warm, classic colors to give it a "scrappy" look. Karel enjoys incorporating many different fabric prints in her designs along with precise hand quilting and hand appliqué that are beautifully done. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.
  • Five Dresden plates, set on point are featured in this fine, traditional quilt. The Dresden plates are machine pieced and then hand appliquéd onto the background squares. They are surrounded by Karel's signature triple borders and corner squares as the sashing. Cross-hatching has been hand quilted on the set in triangles to create a small diamond pattern. Many different fabric make up the petals in each Dresden plate for a "scrappy" look. A small floral print in a soft green was used to create a perfect frame for all the colors. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.
  • This sweet hedgehog quilt is just waiting to find a good home, either hanging on the wall or as a treasured blanket for the special little person in your life. The border fabric sets the color theme in blues and browns which are then echoed in coordinating prints. The patchwork pattern seems to circle around the central hedgehog critter. The hand quilting and appliqué work are beautifully done too in this one of a kind quilt. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signuture patch are included on the back.
  • A cute foxy little critter is at the center of this delightful children's quilt that can be used hanging on the wall or as a treasured blanket. Charming fabric with hedgehogs and foxes along with brown and blue prints frame the fox and create the illusion of circles around the quilt. The border completes the quilt with more little foxes in keeping with the theme. The hand appliqué and quilting are expertly done with lots of time and attention to detail. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.
  • Stars and Striped fabrics are combined in this charming, red, white and blue patriotic quilt. Four patchwork hearts are framed with a small red diamond border. Fun fabrics include tiny flags and stars which have been combined to create this Americana piece. Notice the fine hand-quilting which nicely accents the design along with the embroidery stitching around the stars. This is the perfect quilt for anyone who loves our country. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signature patch have been included on the back of the quilt.
  • Red, White, and blues in charming paisleys, stripes and floral fabrics are used for the log cabin blocks in this lovely small quilt. The placement of light and darks are artfully arranged to create the perfect frame for the hand-appliquéd blocks. Tulips and buds along with flowers have been used, note the outside flower centers have been fussy cut so a small star is in the circle. The fabric with clusters of flowers on a Swiss dot background fabric completes the look. A hangin sleeve and Karel's signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.
  • Wooly sheep and saw tooth stars have been combined with a fun block called "this and that" in this original small quilt. The wool sheep are appliquéd onto the background using the button hole stitch which is all done by hand. The graceful willow tree in the center block has been created using lots of hand embroidery stitches as a sheep stands underneath holding a sweet little heart. Fabric prints were carefully selected and include stripes and small florals. Karel loves combining touches of wool fabrics along with cottons in this special quilt along with fine hand-quilting. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.
  • Stars, flowers and berries seem to spring out of a red heart in the center block of Karel's original design called Star Flower. Her signature triple border and corner squares nicely frame the center block. Take note of the fine hand quilting in the triangles around the center design as well as the beautiful hand appliqué throughout the design. The traditional pieced star block is called Sarah's choice and a variation of the log cabin block flank each side of the star and berries border. Karel enjoys mixing many different fabrics in her quilts to give them a "scrappy" look and this quilt is a great example of that. A hanging sleeve and Karel's signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.
