Patchwork Quilts

It is hard to imagine that patchwork quilts could be so wondrously varied in design and coloring as they are here in Lancaster. While some traditional Amish designs are made to be reproductions of 18th and 19th Century quilts, most quilts are created with goal of being more lovely than what was made before. Consequently there are many differing and unique renditions of even the most traditional patchwork patterns.

Many of the quilts shown here are marked indicating that they are “available now” for shipment –we are usually able to ship quilts so marked no later than the next business day. Other quilts shown have been sold, but often we are able to find a very similar well-made quilt that can be shipped quickly. Alternatively we can arrange for a similar quilt to be custom made.

Take your time looking through our galleries, there is a lot to see. We try to show respects for the quilts and the quilters by properly showing them.

  • Here is a beautiful King size Trip Around the World quilt. This pattern is similar to the Postage Stamp quilts that have 36 fabrics and patches cut and sewn leaving a 1 ” block. This Colorsplash quilt is using 24 fabrics, cut and sewn so each block is 1 1/2″ square making this more economical to make. What a beautiful slate blue and gold vintage combination of 24 different fabrics selected by C Jean Horst. Made by a local Amish woman — note the careful patchwork piecing and the fine quilting. This quilt is symmetric meaning all borders are equal on all 4 sides. Makes a stunning quilt to hang.
  • Imagine all blue batiks! A fresh look but a traditional pattern. This Tumbling Block is a winner. Another wonderful creation of C Jean Horst. Excellent and precise patchwork piecing and lots of fine quilting. Made by Lancaster County Amish woman. This quilt is symmetric with all borders equal on all sides. Notice it has a 3 dimensional appearance. Fun quilt pattern to gaze at for a long time and perhaps even use on your large wall space.

A popular classic design (usually called Flying Geese), but the first that we have seen with Batik style hand painted fabrics specially selected by C Jean Horst (Lancaster’s renowned quilt designer). Here is a very striking Bargello design with extra soft Batik style color fast 100 % cotton prints selected by C Jean Horst. Note the care taken with the complicated piecing, and the fantastic border fabrics. Both pieced and quilted by an Amish friend and signed and managed by C Jean Horst who designed and selected the fabrics and supplied an accurate pattern for sewing as well as oversaw the steps through the project.
