Patchwork Quilts

It is hard to imagine that patchwork quilts could be so wondrously varied in design and coloring as they are here in Lancaster. While some traditional Amish designs are made to be reproductions of 18th and 19th Century quilts, most quilts are created with goal of being more lovely than what was made before. Consequently there are many differing and unique renditions of even the most traditional patchwork patterns.

Many of the quilts shown here are marked indicating that they are “available now” for shipment –we are usually able to ship quilts so marked no later than the next business day. Other quilts shown have been sold, but often we are able to find a very similar well-made quilt that can be shipped quickly. Alternatively we can arrange for a similar quilt to be custom made.

Take your time looking through our galleries, there is a lot to see. We try to show respects for the quilts and the quilters by properly showing them.

  • The Double Wedding Ring Quilt has an interesting history. It is thought this style of ring came to America through Germanic people who settled in Pennsylvania in the last 17th century. This pattern of interlocking rings was seen on coverlets, ceramics and other decorative objects in early America. This ring motif was popular in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. They consisted of rings that could be interlocked. During the engagement one was worn by the man and the other by the woman. When they married the two rings were fitted together to be worn by the wife. A great Wedding Present! Note the interesting collection of batik prints selected for this quilt. • This is a brand new quilt arranged by C Jean Horst that is so exquisite with its hundreds of yards of hand quilting thread – this one has 693 yards of hand quilting with 8-9 stitches per inch – roughly 200,000 stitches!!! It is exceptionally heavily hand quilted with feathers – large and small, and also a charming and beautiful heavily quilted border design. The cream background, even though it is a tiny tone on tone 100% quilter’s cotton print, shows up all the stitches and designs so nicely. While being a traditional patchwork pattern, Jean has transformed it into an heirloom quality quilt due to the exceptional yardage of hand quilting displayed.
