Quilts made in Lancaster reflect the diversity of culture and the comfortable lifestyles of the peoples that have settled here. Lancaster’s verdant beauty and highly productive farmland gave its settlers the inspiration as well as the time and money to engage in the creation of amazing quilts.
Handmade bed quilts made in Lancaster today, build on its traditions — most quilters adapt patterns seen in 18th and 19th Century Lancaster County quilts. However, there isn’t a drive here to simply replicate Great Grandmother Zook’s best quilts. Instead, Lancaster’s current generation of quilters are striving to outdo their grandmothers and create even more amazing quilts. The low cost, high quality, and multitude of printed fabrics give these modern quilters a palette their grandmothers could not imagine.
Early quilts were made for personal use, often in response to a birth or a wedding. As a matter of pride and respect, these quilts were made to very high standards at a time when most women were already very proficient with a needle and thread. Some of Lancaster’s quilters today match their forebears in stitching and attention to detail, even in quilts that they make for others.
High quality Lancaster handmade quilts more than hold their value. Well cared for Lancaster quilts, similar to the ones offered here, that were made 25 years ago typically sell at auction for twice their purchase price.
The beauty and visual impact of the bed quilts we offer cannot, of course, be completely captured in a photograph or even a series of photographs — but we do our best to give you a good look! Folks who have bought our quilts tell us that they look even better on their beds than on their computer screens.
If you see a quilt that you love, but it is the wrong size — please contact us . We can check to see if a similar well-made quilt in the right size is available. We can also arrange for a quilt to be custom made.

A popular classic design, but the first King that we have seen with Batik style hand painted fabrics specially selected by C Jean Horst (Lancaster’s renowned quilt designer). Jean calls the design Courthouse Log Cabin Stars. Even more beautiful than the photographs! Signed and dated by C Jean Horst. Well quilted by a local Amish woman. Would also make an amazing wall hanging!

A beautiful and fresh change for a log cabin quilt! Here Jean has used her batiks in blues and paprikas to make a striking but simple log cabin, which is why she calls it Simplicity. She has made a common quilt very unique with her choice of batiks. While each patch is unique, all blocks are working together beautifully to show off an awesome collection of cotton batiks. She also has a documentation tag on the back corner which gives the name of the quilt, the maker, the location, the date, and the fabric content as well as a note “made in the USA.”

A lovely design with a great collection of 100% cotton batik style fabrics selected by C Jean Horst.. Very well pieced! Be sure to note the interesting quilting design done in the parchment background surrounding the diamond star. This pattern is so interesting because it is derived from the log cabin style quilt, but instead of beginning with the square in the center of each block, this quilt begins with a diamond for it’s center of each diamond block. Then the sizes of the strips that are sewn around the diamond are cut in two widths, a narrow side and a wider side. Imaculate and well done. A beautiful pattern making a statement of quality.

A Fresh quilt from the book Simply Retro using classic blocks – the half square triangle. The concept of “retro” is pretty wonderful; it means “reminiscent of things past.” Isn’t that appropriate for quilting? Here C Jean Horst is using fresh, modern fabrics and it makes a traditional block feel “new” again. This quilt called Fresh is one of my favorites from the book Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley. It includes 2 pieced and hand quilted Pillow Shams as show in the photographs. The feather quilted circles in the quilt accent well with the straight line quilting designs through the blocks making it a very homey and cozy quilt for a good looking bedroom. Fabrics are all 100% cotton.

Here is a new fresh quilt rearranged into pinwheels similar to the quilt called Fresh from the book “Simply Retro”. Included with the quilt are two king size pillow shams. The concept of retro means reminiscent of things past which is so fitting with the pinwheels reminding us all of the windmills of the past generation. Here is a gentle reminder of our heritage again in a beautiful hand quilted quilt. Here C Jean Horst used the fabric collections from PB Textiles collection called Classical Elements. Beautiful grays and whites in 100% cottons!
