Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

  • The Double Wedding Ring Quilt has an interesting history. It is thought this style of ring came to America through Germanic people who settled in Pennsylvania in the last 17th century. This pattern of interlocking rings was seen on coverlets, ceramics and other decorative objects in early America. This ring motif was popular in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. They consisted of rings that could be interlocked. During the engagement one was worn by the man and the other by the woman. When they married the two rings were fitted together to be worn by the wife. A great Wedding Present! Note the interesting collection of batik prints selected for this quilt. • Corn and Beans? How about Tillie’s Treasures? Either name, this old pattern is certainly a beauty and the name Tillie is an old English name from the early 1900s. This pattern is done in half square triangles which follows the tradition of very old quilts. I love quilts that have a secondary design forming from the 4 light triangles coming together as neighbors and making a light square appearing to be set on the point even though the actual patch is square and set into the quilt top with a square placement. It appears to be a complex pattern and it’s stunning variegated coloring almost appears to shimmer. The fabrics are all 100% first quality cotton prints. The quilt is hand quilted with 8 tiny stitches per inch of thread. A practical beauty for any bedroom.
  • An amazing quilt with beautiful fresh 100%cotton fabrics selected by C Jean Horst. Note the unusual patchwork design and how cleverly Jean employs the fabrics to move from one color into the next. Excellent patchwork and fine quilting. This quilt would look fabulous if you turned back the pillow throw and stacked pillows on the head end because the quilt back is repeated in the fabric print that is in the top side. Fabric selections with quality backings of the same like print is a goal for Jean’s quilts and sets them apart from all the others. She is working very hard to purchase enough fabrics to do this for many of her quilts. Made here in Lancaster by an Amish woman. Photographs can not begin to capture its beauty!
  • The Storm at Sea vividly depicts the rolling waves of a stormy sea. Surprisingly, the illusion of waves is created by a few geometric shapes – squares, triangles, rectangles and diamonds. Here, C Jean Horst changed the color pallet to emphasize different elements within the design which resulted in twinkling and stunning stars and wavy lines, creating a new look for an old design. This in an interesting old scriptural-based pattern taken from Mark 4:37-39 NIV where Jesus calms the Storm when he said “Quiet! Be still!” and the wind died down and it was completely calm. Lovely heirloom with comforting history of this pattern.

  • A Fresh quilt from the book Simply Retro using classic blocks – the half square triangle. The concept of “retro” is pretty wonderful; it means “reminiscent of things past.” Isn’t that appropriate for quilting? Here C Jean Horst is using fresh, modern fabrics and it makes a traditional block feel “new” again. This quilt called Fresh is one of my favorites from the book Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley. It includes 2 pieced and hand quilted Pillow Shams as show in the photographs. The feather quilted circles in the quilt accent well with the straight line quilting designs through the blocks making it a very homey and cozy quilt for a good looking bedroom.
