People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in hand appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! Terrific quilt for any country style home! Wonderful collection of traditional cotton plaid prints give this quilt a warm look. Notice the sawtooth border as well as the outer border made from patches. Well made here in Lancaster by an Amish woman. This quilt is symmetric and may be used sideways on a king size bed.

Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in hand appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt.

A very striking Bargello design with extra brilliant Batik style color fast 100 % cotton 25 purple prints selected by C Jean Horst. Note the care taken with the complicated piecing, and the fantastic border fabrics. Both pieced and quilted by an Amish friend and signed and managed by C Jean Horst who designed and selected the fabrics and supplied an accurate pattern for sewing as well as oversaw the steps through the project. She has 32 years of hands on experience

Bargello quilts have been a joy to arrange for years because the blending of fabrics. This quilt has 20 fabrics from light to dark making a stunning arrangement and show of color. This quilt pattern referred to as Bargello Argyle is beautifully designed by Eileen Wright in her book More Twist-and-Turn Bargello Quilts by Martingale. It is reminiscent of the sweaters that were hand knitted in years gone by. It is a perfectly symmetrical quilt that has great eye appeal. This hand quilted quilt is made with 100 % quilters quality cotton fabrics ranging from very light tans to almost gray blacks. Beautiful !
