Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

    Patchwork Autumn is an original design by Karel and was created out of her love for the fall season.  Hand appliqué hollyhocks, flowers, a goldfinch and pumpkins are surrounded with blocks that include the Friendship star, pinwheel, Ohio star and the churndash patterns to name a few.  Half square triangles and hourglass blocks add to it’s charm as well.  The border features tumbling leaves in fall colors that seem to be falling around the edge.  Take note of the beautiful hand quilting that accents the design.     A graceful floral wreath is the focal point of this stunning small quilt.  Tulips, buds and flowers are combined in a pleasing arrangement with corner appliqué blocks radiating out from the center design.  The ribbon star blocks that surround the center make a bold statement as they frame the wreath and are followed by a classic checkerboard border.  A variety of prints that include geometric and floral prints work together very well and, as you can see from the border picture, the hand quilting is exceptional in this beauty.     Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor  quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time as a full scale quilt!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in machine appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, machine applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt. The backing of this quilt is covered with a light ivory batik  fabric of 100% cotton to accent the front side. The documentation label is on the back corner and signed by C Jean Horst in quilter’s pigma pen to save the history. Made in USA

It is reminiscent of the sweaters that were hand knitted in years gone by. It is a perfectly symmetrical quilt that has great eye appeal.     Comin Up Sunshine is a nice variation on the Mariner’s Compass pattern.  For this quilt Karel choose to use Civil War reproduction fabrics for a vintage look.  Take note of how precisely the points and curves were pieced in this difficult pattern. The curved theme is repeated in graceful flowers that surround the center block.  The appliqué and quilting , both done by hand,  are beautifully sewn as well.  A burgundy border featuring small berries and leaves are the perfect frame for this special quilt.     Five Dresden Plates set on point are the focus of this fine traditional quilt.  The Dresden Plates are machine pieced and then hand-appliqued to each of the background squares.  They are then surrounded by Karel’s signature triple borders with charming paisley corner squares.  Note the plaid fabric that was used for the backgrounds, and the cross-hatching that is hand quilted in the set in triangles that surround the blocks.  A variety of prints create interesting plates and give a “scrappy” look to them.     This beautiful quilt has a very striking star in the central design and its navy and teal points in the star radiate out to give the star an almost splintered look. The fabrics are so beautiful and blend nicely with the beautiful pieced borders. Look closely and you will see that the border has borrowed 1/4 of the star parts from the center design to dance around its outside edges. The outer border is navy and the inner is a beautiful paisley.  Magnificent design that is simply beautiful. 100% cotton fabrics in the entire quilt. The hand-quilted stitches measure 8 stitches per inch. The backing of this quilt is also 100% cotton and is a beautiful very light teal paisley print. Pattern design by Dolores Yoder.

So many charming blue and tan fabrics were used in the piecing of this quilt, including the lovely paisley border fabric.  It’s interesting that 8-pointed stars are almost hidden until you look for them.  Attention to detail and workmanship are evident in this special quilt.     The beautiful blue and tan paisley fabric in the border were the inspiration for the color palette of this Starberry quilt.  The use of neutral log cabin blocks using cream and tan fabrics as the background for the center design were a nice choice.  A woven tan fabric used as the background for the stars and berries creates added visual interest paired next to the 54-40 or fight star blocks as Log cabin blocks finish out the corners. The beautiful hand-quilting really shows up well in the small diamonds called cross-hatching on the background triangles. A hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature patch are included on the back.

This quilt is beautifully hand quilted using 8 hand stitches by a local Amish woman. Signed by CJH, it designer. The back of the quilt is covered with a beautiful soft pale lilac batik print of 100% cotton fabric shown on one of the photo shots. The quilting density is good, averaging about 100 linear inches of stitching per square foot.     Here is a new fresh quilt rearranged into pinwheels similar to the quilt called Fresh from the book “Simply Retro”. Included with the quilt are two matching pillow shams in the every popular gray white fabric combination. The concept of retro means reminiscent of things past which is so fitting with the pinwheels reminding us all of the windmills of the past generation. Here is a gentle reminder of our heritage again in a beautiful locally made hand quilted quilt. Here C Jean Horst used the fabric collections of beautiful grays and whites in 100% cottons! This quilt is a versatile size in that it can be used as a queen with shams or it can be turned the 113 width to completely cover the king bed with a 18″ drop and the quilt going up to the headboard without a pillow tuck over the pillows.  The shams will fit 20 x 36 ” pillows.
