People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

Isn’t this Jacobean Appliqued Wall Hanging a stunning pattern! And the workmanship is just as pleasing. The hot pink of the flowers and the dark green of the leaves and base are featured in the border fabrics and the Flying Geese strips, making the whole a balanced unity. I love the curves of the stems that join the fanciful blooms! It has a sleeve for a hanging rod. The applique design was created by Pat Campbell which she calls Laurel Tree. This beauty would be so fun to sleep under. I can just recall as a kid needing to take afternoon naps and wishing for a quilt just like this to stir my artistic love of fabrics and colors while I tried NOT to fall asleep. But no such quilt was on my bed. The scrappy trip around the world is done in 10″ squares with each block containing 25 small squares per block. These patches are done in 100% cotton batiks and the quilt also has a batik double border and a beautiful backing on the underside. This pattern would also be great to make in Kaffe Fassett fabrics and that idea needs to be on my to do list too. Let’s see if that will happen.

This is a brand new quilt arranged by C Jean Horst that is so exquisite with its hundreds of yards of hand quilting thread – this one has 693 yards of hand quilting with 8-9 stitches per inch – roughly 200,000 stitches!!! It is exceptionally heavily hand quilted with feathers – large and small, and also a charming and beautiful heavily quilted border design. The cream background, even though it is a tiny tone on tone 100% quilter’s cotton print, shows up all the stitches and designs so nicely. While being a traditional patchwork pattern, Jean has transformed it into an heirloom quality quilt due to the exceptional yardage of hand quilting displayed.

Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in hand appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the teal middle border too. This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt.

This is a brand new quilt arranged by C Jean Horst that is so exquisite with its hundreds of yards of hand quilting thread. It is exceptionally heavily hand quilted with feathers – large and small, and also a charming and beautiful heavily quilted border design. The cream background, even though it is a tiny tone on tone 100% quilter’s cotton print, shows up all the stitches and designs so nicely. While being a traditional patchwork pattern, Jean has transformed it into an heirloom quality quilt due to the exceptional yardage of hand quilting displayed.

This quilt is a traditional Log Cabin quilt block done with a unique fussy cut centers. It is made entirely from popular designer Kaffe Fassett’s line of fabrics – both top and backing of the quilt. The fabrics are 100% cotton but are softer than any other manufacturer of quilters cottons that we know of. We also enjoyed making matching pillow shams to work along with the log cabin patch quilt. This colorful quilt will go with a varied number of color schemes and is bright and creates a carefree look. The white pillow is not included but creates another look if you add more of your own pillows. A note about fussy cut — each square for the center of each block was cut one at a time by centering a clear plexiglass template on the fabric to see through to the flower – thus centering the unique flower in the middle of each block. Gorgeous.
