Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

This pattern is done in half square triangles which follows the tradition of very old quilts. I love quilts that have a secondary design forming from the 4 light triangles coming together as neighbors and making a light square appearing to be set on the point even though the actual patch is square and set into the quilt top in a square placement. It appears to be a complex pattern and it’s stunning variegated coloring almost appears to shimmer. The fabrics are all 100% first quality cotton prints. • The Double Wedding Ring Quilt has an interesting history. It is thought this style of ring came to America through Germanic people who settled in Pennsylvania in the last 17th century. This pattern of interlocking rings was seen on coverlets, ceramics and other decorative objects in early America. This ring motif was popular in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. They consisted of rings that could be interlocked. During the engagement one was worn by the man and the other by the woman. When they married the two rings were fitted together to be worn by the wife. A great Wedding Present! Note the interesting collection of batik prints selected for this quilt. • An amazing quilt with beautiful fresh 100%cotton fabrics selected by C Jean Horst. Note the unusual patchwork design and how cleverly Jean employs the fabrics to move from one color into the next. Excellent patchwork and fine quilting. She is working very hard to purchase enough fabrics to do this for many of her quilts. Made here in Lancaster by an Amish woman. Photographs can not begin to capture its beauty!
  • The Storm at Sea vividly depicts the rolling waves of a stormy sea. Surprisingly, the illusion of waves is created by a few geometric shapes – squares, triangles, rectangles and diamonds. Here, C Jean Horst changed the color pallet to emphasize different elements within the design which resulted in twinkling and stunning stars and wavy lines, creating a new look for an old design. This in an interesting old scriptural-based pattern taken from Mark 4:37-39 NIV where Jesus calms the Storm when he said “Quiet! Be still!” and the wind died down and it was completely calm. Lovely heirloom with comforting history of the pattern.
  • A bold, striking, sharp Quilt. Very attractive fabric selections coloring. Note the careful piecing and fine quilting. The quilt featured and quilt available have a few small changes. • A breathtaking quilt inspired by nature! Gorgeous colors of a crisp, Autumn day in North America. 8 geese, so realistic you can almost hear them calling to each other, take flight in the clear blue sky among pieced triangles traditionally called “flying geese.” What a clever design! Very well pieced and hand quilted by an Amish woman in her Lancaster County, Pennsylvania home.

  • The Dutchmans Puzzle blocks are made from flying-geese units that are sewn together in pairs. The points rotate around the blocks, creating lots of motion in the quilt top. Since each pair of flying-geese units requires only one light and one dark fabric, the quilt provides an opportunity to use various amounts of many interesting 100% cotton fabrics. It makes a visually magnificent and colorful but quaint looking quilt. Beautiful and vintage!! A new pattern for us to make. Love it !
  • This is a special bargello quilt that I designed on my husbands first year anniversary from having an open heart surgery. This heartbeat quilt shows an EKG that reminds me of how fortunate I am every time I look at it. It is another of C Jean Horst’s bargello quilts made with beautiful batik fabrics which she loves to work with. The border is especially interesting and has an added beauty to it by the combination of all the 25 fabrics used.

  • Great rendition of one of those classic but rarely seen designs. Outstanding fabric selections by C Jean Horst. Well sewn and hand quilted by an Amish woman. Patchwork quilts were more for warmth in the past, but now they are valued for the beauty of individual choices of fabric and design. This one is an interesting array of blues and tans that work together to give a warm cottage feel to the room. This is a terrific quilt and deserves a beautiful home.
