People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

While this quilt doesn’t look at old fashioned, the bright bold fabrics, the quilting pattern, and the border are all similar to Irish Chain Quilts made in Lancaster in the early 20th Centuries. A beautiful and fresh change for a log cabin quilt! Here Jean has used her batiks in blues and paprikas to make a striking but simple log cabin, which is why she calls it Simplicity. She has made a common quilt very unique with her choice of batiks. While each patch is unique, all blocks are working together beautifully to show off an awesome collection of cotton batiks. She also has a documentation tag on the back corner which gives the name of the quilt, the maker, the location, the date, and the fabric content as well as a note “made in the USA.”

Hannah selected the fabrics for this perfectly appliqued quilt. The autumn colors on the light tan background makes the carefully sewn applique work look even sharper! Note the care taken in selecting portions of the printed fabric to use for each piece of applique and how well each is oriented to enhance the overall design. Quite often the quantity and quality of the quilting on this style of quilt leaves a lot to be desired — not here! Look at the very fine stitching.

This heartbeat quilt shows an EKG that reminds me of how fortunate I am every time I look at it. The Dutchmans Puzzle blocks are made from flying-geese units that are sewn together in pairs. The points rotate around the blocks, creating lots of motion in the quilt top. Since each pair of flying-geese units requires only one light and one dark fabric, the quilt provides an opportunity to use various amounts of many interesting 100% cotton fabrics. It makes a visually magnificent and colorful but quaint looking quilt. Beautiful and vintage!! A new pattern for us to make. Love it !

Tillie’s Treasures/Corn and Beans — Either name, this old, quaint pattern is certainly a beauty and somewhat unusual. The name Tillie is an old English name from the early 1900s. This pattern is done in half square triangles which follows the tradition of very old quilts. I love quilts that have a secondary design forming from the 4 light triangles coming together as neighbors and making a light square appearing to be set on the point even though the actual patch is square and set into the quilt top in a square placement. It appears to be a complex pattern and it’s stunning variegated coloring almost appears to shimmer. The fabrics are all 100% first quality cotton prints. The quilt is hand quilted with 8 tiny stitches per inch of thread. A practical beauty for any bedroom.
