People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

$1,295The Double Wedding Ring Quilt has an interesting history. It is thought this style of ring came to America through Germanic people who settled in Pennsylvania in the last 17th century. This pattern of interlocking rings was seen on coverlets, ceramics and other decorative objects in early America. This ring motif was popular in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. They consisted of rings that could be interlocked. During the engagement one was worn by the man and the other by the woman. When they married the two rings were fitted together to be worn by the wife. A great Wedding Present! Note the interesting collection of batik prints selected for this quilt. A beautiful and fresh change for a log cabin quilt! Here Jean has used her batiks in blues and paprikas to make a striking but simple log cabin, which is why she calls it Simplicity. She has made a common quilt very unique with her choice of batiks. While each patch is unique, all blocks are working together beautifully to show off an awesome collection of cotton batiks. She also has a documentation tag on the back corner which gives the name of the quilt, the maker, the location, the date, and the fabric content as well as a note “made in the USA.”

A lovely design with a great collection of 100% cotton batik style fabrics selected by C Jean Horst.. Very well pieced! Be sure to note the interesting quilting design done in the parchment background surrounding the diamond star. This pattern is so interesting because it is derived from the log cabin style quilt, but instead of beginning with the square in the center of each block, this quilt begins with a diamond for it’s center of each diamond block. Then the sizes of the strips that are sewn around the diamond are cut in two widths, a narrow side and a wider side. Imaculate and well done. A beautiful pattern making a statement of quality.

The concept of “retro” is pretty wonderful; it means “reminiscent of things past.” Isn’t that appropriate for quilting? Here C Jean Horst is using fresh, modern fabrics and it makes a traditional block feel “new” again. This quilt called Fresh is my favorite pattern from the book Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley. It includes 2 pieced and hand quilted Pillow Shams as shown in the photographs. The feather quilted circles in the quilt accent well with the straight line quilting designs through the blocks making it a very homey and cozy quilt for a good looking bedroom. Fabrics are all 100% quality cotton and the hand quilting has 8 – 9 stitches per inch. Looks great with little white pillow – not included. More pillows would be lovely.

Made here in Lancaster by an Amish woman, and signed in ink on back by C Jean Horst along with the name of the quilt, date, location, fabric content and the note of it being made and quilted by an Amish woman and a note that is was made in America. Notice the hand quilted cabels going one direction and the straight lines running the other way.

Patchwork quilts were more for warmth in the past, but now they are valued for the beauty of individual choices of fabric and design. This one is an interesting array of blues and tans that work together to give a warm cottage feel to the room. This is a terrific quilt and deserves a beautiful home.

Another new design by C Jean Horst! What a charming but beautiful quilt in dark, medium and light teal 100% cotton batik prints to make up the stacked blocks of this quilt. Here is a unique tumbling blocks that has 4 diamonds of dark fabrics, 4 diamonds of medium fabrics and 4 diamonds of light fabrics grouped together to make each finished block. A real interesting grouping of many batik fabrics are used to create each of the sides of the blocks. It was pieced by an Amish woman and quilted using 8 hand stitches per inch. A nicely arranged design. And if you would like your own colors, we can do a special order quilt if you give us 6 -7 months time to complete a special quilt just for you.
