People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

This quilt pattern referred to as Bargello Argyle is beautifully designed by Eileen Wright in her book More Twist-and-Turn Bargello Quilts by Martingale. It is reminiscent of the sweaters that were hand knitted in years gone by. It is a perfectly symmetrical quilt that has great eye appeal. Historically, this quilt pattern was a favorite wedding gift for young brides and has been extremely popular since the 1920’s. Subtle and sophisticated with lots of history! Note the interesting collection of 100% batik cotton sea mist blues and greens selected for this quilt as well as the perfectly round and intercepting rings so well sewn. Well quilted by Amish woman. Signed and dated by its creator, C Jean Horst of Lancaster. 118″ wide is exceptionally generous for a king bed. -
This quilt is a traditional Log Cabin quilt block done with a unique fussy cut centers. It is made entirely from popular designer Kaffe Fassett’s line of fabrics – both top and backing of the quilt. The fabrics are 100% cotton but are softer than any other manufacturer of quilters cottons that we know of. We also enjoyed making matching pillow shams to work along with the log cabin patch quilt. This colorful quilt will go with a varied number of color schemes and is bright and creates a carefree look. The white pillow is not included but creates another look if you add more of your own pillows. A note about fussy cut — each square for the center of each block was cut one at a time by centering a clear plexiglass template on the fabric to see through to the flower – thus centering the unique flower in the middle of each block. Gorgeous.

This quilt is great to decorate around with lots of color options. This Colorsplash quilt is using 24 fabrics, cut and sewn so each block is 1 1/2″ square. What a beautiful combination of 24 different soft pastel fabrics selected by C Jean Horst. Sewn by a local Amish woman — note the careful patchwork piecing and the fine quilting. A 100% beautiful pale tan/yellow cotton covers the back of the quilt shown on one of the photos. The quilting density is more than adequate, averaging about 75 linear inches of stitching per square foot. The stitching is very good with about 8 stitches per inch. The back corner tag has the documentation recorded of the name of the pattern, the maker, the fabric content, the area, and a note about made in America. This is a beauty! A high quality quilt. -

Both pieced and quilted by an Amish friend and signed and managed by C Jean Horst who designed and selected the fabrics and supplied an accurate pattern for sewing as well as oversaw the steps through the project. The back of the quilt is covered with a 100% quilters cotton in a beautiful multi print that blends with colors of the quilt. (photo shows the backing which could make this quilt reversible – its beautiful) The quilting density is excellent. The hand quilting is great at 8 stitches per inch. The back corner tag documents the name of the quilt, the maker and fabric content as well as a comment about being made in the USA. Fabulous and outstanding in color! A brilliant combination!
