Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

    A graceful floral wreath is the focal point of this stunning small quilt. Tulips, buds and flowers are combined in a pleasing arrangement with corner appliqué blocks radiating out from the center design.  The ribbon star blocks make a bold statement as they frame the central wreath and next comes a checkerboard border just to set it all off.  Karel chose to use civil war reproduction quilts because the tiny prints lend themselves so well to the small appliqué pieces.  The variety of prints include stripes, florals and geometrics that add extra interest to the design.  As you can see from the border, the hand-quilting is beautiful as well.  A hanging sleeve as well as Karel’s signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.

    Karel found this pattern years ago and has found it to be the perfect setting for the appliqué in this design.  The baby elephant has been hand appliqué with hand embroidered tail and eyes.  Gray, white and yellow are a lovely color scheme perfect for a new baby nursery. The hand appliqué work on the hearts and baby elephant have been expertly done with embroidered eyes and tail.  A variety of prints have been used to achieve the scrappy look of this piece with geometrics, florals and polka dots to name a few.  Hand quilting is beautifully done in this charming quilt.     Late summer is Karel’s favorite time of the year and was the inspiration for this fun small quilt.  A sunflower bud and sunflower have been created using the Dresden plate pattern, an appliquéd wool center with french knots and prairie points were added  on the flower.  A bumble bee flies happily around the flower as orange pumpkins sit underneath. The black crow perched on the pumpkin is another detail using wool appliqué.  A combination of machine pieced churn dash and 9-patches blocks were chosen to complete this quilt.  The hand appliqué and quilting  beautifully enhance the design as well.     Comin Up Sunshine is a nice variation on the Mariner’s Compass pattern.  For this quilt Karel choose to use Civil War reproduction fabrics for a vintage look.  Take note of how precisely the points and curves were pieced in this difficult pattern. The curved theme is repeated in graceful flowers that surround the center block.  The appliqué and quilting , both done by hand,  are beautifully sewn as well.  A burgundy border featuring small berries and leaves are the perfect frame for this special quilt. For added interest, Karel chose to use different fabrics in the sashing surrounding the blocks for a scrappy look.  Note the different background fabrics used in the blocks as well. A green print was chosen for the outer border to echo the color of leaves in nature. The piecing is precise and the appliqué and hand-quilting are  beautiful in this special quilt.     A classic red and blue color palette was chosen for this charming original Strarberry design.  Using a pieced background log cabin blocks for the center adds additional interest.  Stars and berries with a central flower are beautifully appliquéd along with precise piecing on the log cabin blocks and 54-40 or fight blocks.  Hand-quilted diamonds called cross-hatching have been quilted on the tan leaf background triangles that surround the center blocks.  All elements of this design come together in such a delightful way on this classic quilt. A hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.

    Stars, flowers and berries seem to spring out of a red heart in the center block of Karel’s original design called Star Flower. Her signature triple border and corner squares nicely frame the center block. Take note of the fine hand quilting in the triangles around the center design as well as the beautiful hand appliqué throughout the design. The traditional pieced star block is called Sarah’s choice and a variation of the log cabin block flank each side of the star and berries border. Karel enjoys mixing many different fabrics in her quilts to give them a “scrappy” look and this quilt is a great example of that.
