Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

The back of the quilt is covered with a beautiful soft batik print of 100% cotton fabric shown on one of the photo shots. The quilting density is good, averaging about 100 linear inches of stitching per square foot. The hand quilting is wonderful with 8 tiny stitches per inch and the quilt has a back corner tag that documents the name of the quilt pattern, designer, fabric content and made in USA by our Amish friends.

    Five Dresden plates set on point are the focus of this fine traditional quilt. The Dresden plates are machine pieced and then hand appliquéd to each of the background squares. They are surrounded by Karel’s signature triple borders and corner squares.  Cross-hatching has been hand quilted on the set in triangles and creates a diamond design.   Many different fabrics were used on each plate which adds lots of interest.  A small floral blue print was used for the border for the perfect finish on this beautiful quilt. a hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature patch are included on the back.

In this quilt the light logs create a great background for the autumnal pumpkins with their vines and leaves while the dark logs create a frame around them.  1″ logs have been used to create a scrappy feel and give the opportunity for many earthtone fabrics to be used.  A soft green fabric with floating leaves has been used as the border to frame this quilt.  The hand quilting and appliqué are beautifully done as well. A hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature tag are included on the back of the quilt.

    Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor  quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time as a full scale quilt!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in machine appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and machine quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt. The backing of this quilt is covered with a medium green swirl fabric of 100% cotton to accent the front side.     Late summer is Karel’s favorite time of the year and was the inspiration for this fun small quilt.  A sunflower bud and sunflower have been created using the Dresden plate pattern, an appliquéd wool center with french knots and prairie points were added  on the flower.  A bumble bee flies happily around the flower as orange pumpkins sit underneath. The black crow perched on the pumpkin is another detail using wool appliqué.  A combination of machine pieced churn dash and 9-patches blocks were chosen to complete this quilt.  The hand appliqué and quilting  beautifully enhance the design as well.     Here is one of Karel’s classic original designs, the trumpet flower,  and it has always been a customer favorite.  Winding trumpet flowers, vines and leaves are surrounded by 5 1/2″ log cabin blocks and primitive stars in each of the 4 corners.  Multi colored fabrics have been used in warm, country colors that give it a “scrappy” look as well.  Karel is known for incorporating many different fabric prints in her designs along with hand quilting and appliqué that are expertly done.
