People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in hand appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the teal middle border too. This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt.

This is a special bargello quilt that I designed on my husbands first year anniversary from having an open heart surgery. This heartbeat quilt shows an EKG that reminds me of how fortunate I am every time I look at it. It is another of C Jean Horst’s bargello quilts made with beautiful batik fabrics which she loves to work with. The border is especially interesting and has an added beauty to it by the combination of all the 25 fabrics used.

Truly elegant! The Calla Garden is the most recent appliqué design from C Jean Horst designs. Here is a garden of Calla lilies, surrounded with tulips and 3 dimensional rosebuds as well as bunches of delicious looking grapes. This pattern was designed for a customer who loved the Petal Showcase and asked that I use calla lilies in her design. We loved her idea too and now offer it as a regular pattern. The quilt has 8 stitches per inch and is well quilted with feather designs and cross hatching sections. All hand appliquéd! So special! There is a special decorative braid used to accent the border and the central motif.

Note the all hand appliqued designs and do not miss the tiny little hummingbirds!! Excellent and abundant fine quilting with beautiful quilted feathers surrounding the central appliqué. Made in Lancaster. Copyright pattern — directions unavailable. The stitching is very close and very exceptional with 8 hand stitches per inch quilted by our Amish friend. The pretty backing is 100% cotton in an ivory tone on tone print. The documentation tag is on the back corner and it lists the pattern name, maker, origin, date, fabric content, and made in the USA. We are the hand quilt capital of the world here in Lancaster County, Pa.
