Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

    This happy small quilt was inspired by Karel’s love of butterflies in her garden during the summer.  The blue and yellow color scheme is reminicent of sunshine and the blue skies.  Morning Glories wind their way around the butterfly house and have hand embroidered  french knots in the center of each flower.  Friendship stars and 9-patch blocks are featured with a yellow butterfly flying amongst them.  The hand quilting and appliqué are expertly done in this cheerful quilt.     Flowers and friendship stars go hand in hand in this original design by Karel.  Her triple signature border and corner squares surround the central floral design.  The floral fabric in the border has a vintage feel with small bouquets and is contrasted by the green checked inner border she used. A variation of the log cabin block works nicely in the corners against the stars and appliqué flowers.  Precise hand-quilting creates a diamond design in each of the triangles that surround the center, along with beautiful appliqué  and the color scheme includes, tan, red, green, and black.

    A whimsical pumpkin with leaves and primitive stars set on circles are in the center of log cabin blocks in this warm fall quilt.  The traditonal log cabin pattern has always been a favorite of Karel’s and the clever placement of light and dark logs create a pleasing background for the appliqué.  Small 1″ logs have been used and give opportunity for many earth tone fabrics to be used which create a nice scrappy effect.  The floral border print is a perfect frame to finish the quilt and the appliqué and hand quilting are beautifully done in this fun quilt.     This original design was inspired by wonderful memories of summer days spent on Grandpa’s farms as a little girl.  Using a Sawtooth star block to frame the the whimsical farm animals is a nice design choice.  The animals and accent elements of the barn have each been done with wool appliqué.  From the plump pig to the chick that is newly hatched, the attention to detail make this a very special quilt.  Karel enjoys combining both wool and cotton fabrics which adds dimension and interest to this quilt. The quilting density is very good, averaging about 130 linear inches of stitching per square foot. The stitching is very good with about 8-9 stitches per inch. The quilt has a small documentation tag sewn into the back side of the quilt documenting the maker, fabric content, date, name of pattern, and a note about being made in America, quilted by an Amish friend. The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size bed quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, machine applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border. This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt. The backing of this queen quilt is covered with a light batik fabric of 100% cotton to accent the front side. The documentation label is on the back corner and signed by C Jean Horst in quilter’s sigma ink.

The watercolor  quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time as a full scale quilt!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in machine appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, machine applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border!     What is a Stack and Whack??   It’s so fun to do….Here is a quilt making style that uses one fabric and layers the same exact repeat on top of each other 8 times.  The triangles are cut through a floral fabric to make 8 exact pieces which are sewn together for one patch.  As you cut across the fabric for more patches you will be getting many different areas of a large print fabric which turns out to be a surprise every time!  Here this design has a fun zebra print on the binding as well as added to the corners of the patches at various places.  The hand quilting is done well and is 7 stitches per inch.  The backing is a soft blue and yellow print shows on the one photo.  Don’t forget to double click on each thumbnail to bring them up to full size and see the uniqueness of each block.  This throw even has a sleeve for hanging already in place so that’s a great possibility.

The backing is a one piece tan tone on tone cotton fabric. The quilt is a combination of a Log Cabin and a Lone Star all in one quilt. Fabrics and colors selected by a Mennonite woman and quilted by a Amish women. Was pieced by a 93 yr. Amish woman and sewed on an old treadle machine. So a lot of details went into this quilt.
