Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

    This happy small quilt was inspired by Karel’s love of butterflies in her garden during the summer.  The blue and yellow color scheme is reminicent of sunshine and the blue skies.  Morning Glories wind their way around the butterfly house and have hand embroidered  french knots in the center of each flower.  Friendship stars and 9-patch blocks are featured with a yellow butterfly flying amongst them.  The hand quilting and appliqué are expertly done in this cheerful quilt.     Flowers and friendship stars go hand in hand in this original design by Karel.  Her triple signature border and corner squares surround the central floral design.  The floral fabric in the border has a vintage feel with small bouquets and is contrasted by the green checked inner border she used. A variation of the log cabin block works nicely in the corners against the stars and appliqué flowers.  Precise hand-quilting creates a diamond design in each of the triangles that surround the center, along with beautiful appliqué  and the color scheme includes, tan, red, green, and black.

The log cabin pattern has always been a favorite of Karel’s because there is no end to the ways you can lay out the blocks.  In this quilt the light logs create a great background for the appliqué pumpkins with their vines and leaves while the dark logs frame them perfectly!  1″ logs have been used to create a scrappy feel and give the opportunity for many earth tone fabrics to be used.  The whimsical pumpkin fabric in the border was a great choice to finish it all off and the hand quilting and appliqué in this quilt are just beautiful! A hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature tag are included on the back of the quilt.

    Five Dresden plates set on point are the focus of this fine traditional quilt. The Dresden plates are machine pieced and then hand appliquéd to each of the background squares. They are surrounded by Karel’s signature triple borders and corner squares.  Cross-hatching has been hand quilted on the set in triangles and creates a diamond design.   Many different fabrics were used on each plate which adds lots of interest.  A small floral blue print was used for the border for the perfect finish on this beautiful quilt. a hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature patch are included on the back.

    The Lone Star quilt is likely one of the most recognizable quilt patterns to Americans.  It is also one of the oldest patterns.  The Amish love the large central star pattern and make their fair share of them.  Its  a beautiful but difficult design to get all the corners meeting at the points of the diamonds.  This is a beautiful example of precision piecing with the use of 12 quilters fabrics for the star. The backing of the quilt is done with a cream solid color fabric and the hand quilting stitches are counted at 8 per inch.  A Beauty of a quilt with the extra quilting designs that show up so lovely on the bed top as well as the side drop.

A green print was chosen for the outer border to echo the color of leaves in nature. The piecing is precise and the appliqué and hand-quilting are  beautiful in this special quilt. The background fabric are all in shades of neutrals as well as the backing print is in tan. Quilted by an Amish friend. Signed and dated by its designer. Copyright pattern — no directions are available. A fine tan 100% cotton fabric covers the back of the quilt. The quilting density is very good, averaging about 130 linear inches of stitching per square foot. The stitching is very good with about 8-9 stitches per inch. The quilt has a small documentation tag sewn into the back side of the quilt documenting the maker, fabric content, date, name of pattern, and a note about being made in America, quilted by an Amish friend.     Wooly sheep and saw tooth stars are combined with a fun block called “this and that” in this original small quilt.  The wool sheep are appliquéd onto the background using the button hole stitch which is all done by hand.  The graceful willow tree in the central block has been created using lots more embroidery as a sheep stands underneath holding a sweet little heart.  Fabric prints were carefully selected and includes stripes, and small florals. Karel loves combining touches of wool fabrics with 100% cottons in this special piece.  Don’t miss the fine quilting especially noticeable in the border.     The beautiful blue and tan paisley fabric in the border were the inspiration for the color palette of this Starberry quilt.  The use of neutral log cabin blocks using cream and tan fabrics as the background for the center design were a nice choice.  A woven tan fabric used as the background for the stars and berries creates added visual interest paired next to the 54-40 or fight star blocks as Log cabin blocks finish out the corners. The beautiful hand-quilting really shows up well in the small diamonds called cross-hatching on the background triangles. A hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature patch are included on the back.

    Log cabin blocks done in half light fabrics, and half dark fabrics create the background for the center circle and primitive star in this folk art inspired quilt.  Arching flowers and leaves wind around the center block with corner log cabins blocks completing this pattern.  Pinwheels and checkerboards are another pleasing element in this original design by Karel.  So many tiny reproduction prints were selected and play very nicely together with the precise appliqué and tiny quilting stitches.     Whimsical winter birds and pine boughs are the theme of this charming Log Cabin quilt. Enjoy it all winter long as many of the fabrics are winter themed with pine needles and berries to name a few.  Look closely at the details in the cardinal and chickadee which are made of wool appliqué with hand embroidered touches.  Pinecones on pine branches surround the center block and are hand embroidered as well.  The exquisite hand quilting can be seen especially well in the border and the striped binding is the perfect finish.
