Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

The quilting density is good, averaging about 80 linear inches of stitching per square foot. Very nice quilting, the stitching is good with about 7-8 stitches per inch.

    A graceful floral wreath is the focal point of this stunning small quilt. Tulips, buds and flowers are combined in a pleasing arrangement with corner appliqué blocks radiating out from the center design.  The ribbon star blocks make a bold statement as they frame the central wreath and next comes a checkerboard border just to set it all off.  Karel chose to use civil war reproduction quilts because the tiny prints lend themselves so well to the small appliqué pieces.  The variety of prints include stripes, florals and geometrics that add extra interest to the design.  As you can see from the border, the hand-quilting is beautiful as well.  A hanging sleeve as well as Karel’s signature patch are included on the back of the quilt.

    Five Dresden plates set on point are at the center of this fine, traditional quilt.  The Dresden plates are machine pieced and then hand appliquéd to the background squares.  They are framed by Karel’s signature triple border and corner squares.  Cross-hatching has been  hand quilted on the set-in triangles to create a beautiful diamond design.  Civil war reproduction fabrics were carefully selected to create a vintage scrappy feel on this piece.     A classic color palette was chosen for this charming original Starberry design.  Using pieced background log cabin blocks for the center background was a creative choice.  Stars and berries with a center flower are beautifully appliquéd along with precise piecing on the corner log cabin and 54-40 or fight star blocks.  Hand-quilted diamonds called cross-hatching have been done on the floral fabric triangles surrounding the center block. All the elements of this design come together in such a delightful way on this classic quilt. A hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature patch are included on the back.

    Each double nine-patch block measures three inches,  made with scraps and cream muslin fabrics.  The blocks are surrounded with tan color sashing strips with tiny red hearts, and quilted in a cable and diamond motif,  with tiny nine patch blocks used as cornerstones. The center of the quilt has two borders;  a cream color muslin border and a flowered fabric border that complements the center of the quilt.  The last border is cream color muslin that is ten inches wide, and the flowered fabric finishes the quilt in binding,  quilted with both a cable motif and straight lines., with 8 quilting stitches per inch. The quilt measures 90″ x 100″

    ‘Antique Roses’ is a two-color quilt. The roses are a vintage print on a burgundy background, and I used a tan fabric on the “light side” pathway of the quilt.   All the roses, leaves and vines are  quilted in burgundy thread.  The back of the quilt is a traditional cream color muslin.   The length of the quilt can be folded up over the pillows,  and the roses are quilted across it,  as well as at the bottom border, finished with diagonal quilted lines.    The quilt  measures 96 inches wide and 106 inches long.   (the bottom border is folded up over the footboard to show the quilting).

    This sweet as can be applique quilt is made from a vintage quilt pattern, and vintage fabric is used in the quilt top, that includes stacked hearts, tulips, birds and vines. There is a bit of hand embroidery on the vines, and the applique is hand turned. The setting squares are quilted in a circular grid that has the stacked hearts around as the quilting motif. The side borders and bottom of the quilt are quilted in the stacked hearts motif and straight line quilting. The backing is traditional cream color premium muslin, and the binding is dusty rose color fabric. The quilting is exceptional with very tiny stitches. The quilt measures 95 inches wide and is 110 inches long.

    Just picture yourself following the crashing waves along the rocky shores of your dream beach town.  This bargello is a beautiful display of a creative use of batik colors of neutrals, teals, and blues ad purples that represents the surf song created as you imagine yourself following the waves of the ocean.   It’s a new pattern that we love and it is certainly a splendid use of the beautiful batiks as well as the expertness of the Amish seamstress who measured twice and cut once.    It is also hand quilted and the hand stitches are beautifully even.   The outer border of this quilt reminds me of a coral reef with interesting pattern design.  The backing is a light aqua print.  So beautiful and unique.
