People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

Another new design by C Jean Horst! What a charming but beautiful quilt in dark, medium and light teal 100% cotton batik prints to make up the stacked blocks of this quilt. Here is a unique tumbling blocks that has 4 diamonds of dark fabrics, 4 diamonds of medium fabrics and 4 diamonds of light fabrics grouped together to make each finished block. A real interesting grouping of many batik fabrics are used to create each of the sides of the blocks. It was pieced by an Amish woman and quilted using 8 hand stitches per inch. A nicely arranged design. And if you would like your own colors, we can do a special order quilt if you give us 6 -7 months time to complete a special quilt just for you.

Storm at Sea
$1,595The Storm at Sea vividly depicts the rolling waves of a stormy sea. Surprisingly, the illusion of waves is created by a few geometric shapes – squares, triangles, rectangles and diamonds. Here, C Jean Horst changed the color pallet to emphasize different elements within the design which resulted in twinkling and stunning stars and wavy lines, creating a new look for an old design. This in an interesting old scriptural-based pattern taken from Mark 4:37-39 NIV where Jesus calms the Storm when he said “Quiet! Be still!” and the wind died down and it was completely calm. Lovely heirloom with comforting history of this pattern. -
This beauty would be so fun to sleep under. I can just recall as a kid needing to take afternoon naps and wishing for a quilt just like this to stir my artistic love of fabrics and colors while I tried NOT to fall asleep. But no such quilt was on my bed. The scrappy trip around the world is done in 10″ squares with each block containing 25 small squares per block. These patches are done in 100% cotton batiks and the quilt also has a batik double border and a beautiful backing on the underside. This pattern would also be great to make in Kaffe Fassett fabrics and that idea needs to be on my to do list too. Let’s see if that will happen.

A real interesting grouping of many batik fabrics are used to create each of the sides of the blocks. It was pieced by an Amish woman and quilted using 7 – 8 hand stitches per inch. A nicely arranged design.

Subtle, soft and sophisticated! A WOW of a Wedding or Anniversary Present! Note the interesting collection of 100% cotton soft gray/smoke/slate prints on white selected for this quilt. Will work well with many coloring schemes. Well pieced and quilted by a Lancaster Amish woman. Signed and dated by its creator, the well respected quilt designer, C Jean Horst of Lancaster. The back of the quilt is covered with a fine white tone on tone 100% cotton print that coordinates with the feel of the quilt. The hand quilting density is good, averaging about 100 linear inches of stitching per square foot. The stitching is very good with about 8 stitches per inch.

Classic Irish Chain! Pretty rose pink fabric. The natural colored fabric has little dark flecks of cotton. The fabric on the back of the quilt is a lovely, coordinating rose and cream colored print. Beautiful hand quilting! Well made by Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Mennonite quilt designer Connie Lapp and hand quilted by a Mennonite friend. A great quilt that could be used as a wall hanging, throw or crib quilt.
