Welcome to Amish Country Lanes

People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.

Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

    Wooly sheep and saw tooth stars are combined with a fun block called “this and that” in this original small quilt.  The wool sheep are appliquéd onto the background using the button hole stitch which is all done by hand.  The graceful willow tree in the central block has been created using lots more embroidery as a sheep stands underneath holding a sweet little heart.  Fabric prints were carefully selected and includes stripes, and small florals. Karel loves combining touches of wool fabrics with 100% cottons in this special piece.  Don’t miss the fine quilting especially noticeable in the border.     Here is a quilt just perfect for a smaller space in your home.   The log cabin pattern has always been a favorite of Karel’s because there is no end to the ways you can lay out the blocks. In this quilt the light logs create a great background for the autumnal pumpkins with their vines and leaves while the dark logs create a frame around them.  1″ logs have been used to create a scrappy feel and give the opportunity for many earthtone fabrics to be used.  A soft green fabric with floating leaves has been used as the border to frame this quilt.  The hand quilting and appliqué are beautifully done as well. A hanging sleeve and Karel’s signature tag are included on the back of the quilt.

    This delightful quilt came about as a result of Karel’s love of Dresden Plates, and stars and  including many fabrics to create a scrappy look.   The floral wreath in the center has been surrounded with appliquéd  Dresden Plates and pieced 8-pointed stars which are a charming frame for a center appliqué flower. For added interest, Karel chose to use different fabrics in the sashing surrounding the blocks for a scrappy look.  Note the different background fabrics used in the blocks as well. A green print was chosen for the outer border to echo the color of leaves in nature. The piecing is precise and the appliqué and hand-quilting are  beautiful in this special quilt. A hanging sleeve along with Karel’s signature patch is included on the back.

    Patchwork Autumn is an original design by Karel and was created out of her love for the fall season.  Hand appliqué hollyhocks, flowers, a goldfinch and pumpkins are surrounded with blocks that include the Friendship star, pinwheel, Ohio star and the churndash patterns to name a few.  Half square triangles and hourglass blocks add to it’s charm as well.  The border features tumbling leaves in fall colors that seem to be falling around the edge.  Take note of the beautiful hand quilting that accents the design.     The Lone Star quilt is likely one of the most recognizable quilt patterns to Americans.  It is also one of the oldest patterns.  The Amish love the large central star pattern and make their fair share of them.  Its  a beautiful but difficult design to get all the corners meeting at the points of the diamonds.  This is a beautiful example of precision piecing with the use of 12 quilters fabrics for the star. The backing of the quilt is done with a cream solid color fabric and the hand quilting stitches are counted at 8 per inch.  A Beauty of a quilt with the extra quilting designs that show up so lovely on the bed top as well as the side drop.

    Amazing look for many pieced blocks of a style we call “hit or miss” which means a random style of patchwork making up the blocks of this quilt top.   It’s looks like a very old pattern style that is done with new fabrics.   Interesting to look at.  And so much piecing and quilting.   All fabrics are new 100% quilters cottons.  It is a quilt pattern  that is also called “scrap therapy” and was done during the pandemic of 2020!   It is a very interesting and practical quilt with a story to tell. The backing of the quilt is also ivory cotton and coordinates with the ivory fabric on the front of the quilt.  The quilting is very nice and has 8 hand quilted stitches per inch – all done by our Amish friends who love hand quilting.

There are roses along the pathways, and across the top of the quilt that serve as the pillow covering when the bed is made. A short spray of roses are on the bottom of the quilt border as well. The borders are quilted in diagonal lines that add more interest to the quilt. The quilting stitches are delicate and tiny, and the binding is made with white muslin. There are many happy hours of quilting it. The backing is solid white premium muslin. The quilt measures 95 inches wide and 108 inches in length. It is shown on a queen bed.
