People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

A beautiful and fresh change for a log cabin quilt! Here Jean has used her batiks in blues and paprikas to make a striking but simple log cabin, which is why she calls it Simplicity. She has made a common quilt very unique with her choice of batiks. While each patch is unique, all blocks are working together beautifully to show off an awesome collection of cotton batiks. She also has a documentation tag on the back corner which gives the name of the quilt, the maker, the location, the date, and the fabric content as well as a note “made in the USA.”

A Fresh quilt from the book Simply Retro using classic blocks – the half square triangle. The concept of “retro” is pretty wonderful; it means “reminiscent of things past.” Isn’t that appropriate for quilting? Here C Jean Horst is using fresh, modern fabrics and it makes a traditional block feel “new” again. This quilt called Fresh is one of my favorites from the book Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley. It includes 2 pieced and hand quilted Pillow Shams as show in the photographs. The feather quilted circles in the quilt accent well with the straight line quilting designs through the blocks making it a very homey and cozy quilt for a good looking bedroom. Fabrics are all 100% cotton and the hand quilting has 8 + stitches per inch.

Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the quilt and more bright batiks added to hand appliqué the butterflies onto the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 9 exceptional stitches per inch and has a theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the border too. This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt.

Wedding Ring
$1,295The Double Wedding Ring Quilt has an interesting history. It is thought this style of ring came to America through Germanic people who settled in Pennsylvania in the last 17th century. This pattern of interlocking rings was seen on coverlets, ceramics and other decorative objects in early America. This ring motif was popular in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. They consisted of rings that could be interlocked. During the engagement one was worn by the man and the other by the woman. This is a brand new quilt arranged by C Jean Horst that is so exquisite with its hundreds of yards of hand quilting thread – this one has 693 yards of hand quilting with 8-9 stitches per inch – roughly 200,000 stitches!!! It is exceptionally heavily hand quilted with feathers – large and small, and also a charming and beautiful heavily quilted border design. The cream background, even though it is a tiny tone on tone 100% quilter’s cotton print, shows up all the stitches and designs so nicely. While being a traditional patchwork pattern, Jean has transformed it into an heirloom quality quilt due to the exceptional yardage of hand quilting displayed.

This is a special bargello quilt that I designed on my husbands first year anniversary from having an open heart surgery. This heartbeat quilt shows an EKG that reminds me of how fortunate I am every time I look at it. It is another of C Jean Horst’s bargello quilts made with beautiful batik fabrics which she loves to work with. The border is especially interesting and has an added beauty to it by the combination of all the 25 fabrics used.

Truly elegant and the newest design from C Jean Horst designs. Here is a garden of Calla lilies, surrounded with tulips and 3-d rosebuds as well as bunches of delicious looking grapes. This quilt was designed for a customer who loved the Petal Showcase but asked that I use calla lilies in her design. We love it just as much as our customer did. And so we are please to be making more and offering them as a standard quilt in line. This quilt is sold but there will be more being shown in the months ahead.
