People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

Note the care taken in selecting portions of the printed fabric to use for each piece of applique and how well each is oriented to enhance the overall design. Quite often the quantity and quality of the quilting on this style of quilt leaves a lot to be desired — not here! Look at the very fine stitching.

A Fresh quilt from the book Simply Retro using classic blocks – the half square triangle. The concept of “retro” is pretty wonderful; it means “reminiscent of things past.” Isn’t that appropriate for quilting? Here C Jean Horst is using fresh, modern fabrics and it makes a traditional block feel “new” again. This quilt called Fresh is one of my favorites from the book Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley. It includes 2 pieced and hand quilted Pillow Shams as show in the photographs. The feather quilted circles in the quilt accent well with the straight line quilting designs through the blocks making it a very homey and cozy quilt for a good looking bedroom. Fabrics are all 100% cotton.

Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in hand appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt.

Corn and Beans? How about Tillie’s Treasures? Either name, this old pattern is certainly a beauty and the name Tillie is an old English name from the early 1900s. This pattern is done in half square triangles which follows the tradition of very old quilts. I love quilts that have a secondary design forming from the 4 light triangles coming together as neighbors and making a light square appearing to be set on the point even though the actual patch is square and set into the quilt top with a square placement. It appears to be a complex pattern and it’s stunning variegated coloring almost appears to shimmer. The fabrics are all 100% first quality cotton prints. The quilt is hand quilted with 8 tiny stitches per inch of thread. A practical beauty for any bedroom.

Patchwork quilts were more for warmth in the past, but now they are valued for the beauty of individual choices of fabric and design. Tillie’s Treasures/Corn and Beans — Either name, this old, quaint pattern is certainly a beauty and somewhat unusual. The name Tillie is an old English name from the early 1900s. This pattern is done in half square triangles which follows the tradition of very old quilts. I love quilts that have a secondary design forming from the 4 light triangles coming together as neighbors and making a light square appearing to be set on the point even though the actual patch is square and set into the quilt top in a square placement. It appears to be a complex pattern and it’s stunning variegated coloring almost appears to shimmer. The fabrics are all 100% first quality cotton prints. The quilt is hand quilted with 8 tiny stitches per inch of thread. A practical beauty for any bedroom.
