People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

A beautiful and fresh change for a log cabin quilt! Here Jean has used her batiks in blues and paprikas to make a striking but simple log cabin, which is why she calls it Simplicity. She has made a common quilt very unique with her choice of batiks. While each patch is unique, all blocks are working together beautifully to show off an awesome collection of cotton batiks. She also has a documentation tag on the back corner which gives the name of the quilt, the maker, the location, the date, and the fabric content as well as a note “made in the USA.”

A Fresh quilt from the book Simply Retro using classic blocks – the half square triangle. The concept of “retro” is pretty wonderful; it means “reminiscent of things past.” Isn’t that appropriate for quilting? Here C Jean Horst is using fresh, modern fabrics and it makes a traditional block feel “new” again. This quilt called Fresh is one of my favorites from the book Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley. It includes 2 pieced and hand quilted Pillow Shams as show in the photographs. The feather quilted circles in the quilt accent well with the straight line quilting designs through the blocks making it a very homey and cozy quilt for a good looking bedroom. Fabrics are all 100% cotton and the hand quilting has 8 + stitches per inch.

It is certainly an interesting arrangement of light and dark 100% cotton fabrics the was sewn carefully by an Amish quilt piecer. The hand quilting is very nice with 7 hand stitches per inch.

Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being pictured as a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in hand appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt.

The combination of 18 different fabrics are all 100% cottons and they are geometrics in neutrals, grays, and taupes. This is a brand new quilt pattern for us and an imaculate display of hand quilting includes several types of feathers. Especially beautiful feather border design (see corner photo) dancing around the entire perimeter of the quilt. The neutrals on white are perfect for a calm and cool look. The fabrics are all 100 % cotton.

Twisted Bargello

This quilt makes any bed a spectacular view of 20 different 100% quality cotton print fabrics that work well together. Strolling through the park or the woods on a beautiful fall day captures these earthy colors well. Imagine piecing this pattern. It is one of those “think twice and cut once” kind of quilt patterns. Magnificent while charming and appealing to the eye. We love this winding twisted look over the pillow throw. Just a beauty! -
Unusual! Look at all those diamonds! A very attractive design that we have not seen before. Wonderful fabrics selected by C Jean Horst. Made here in Lancaster by an Amish woman, and signed in ink on back by C Jean Horst along with the name of the quilt, date, location, fabric content and the note of it being made and quilted by an Amish woman and a note that is was made in America. Notice the hand quilted cabels going one direction and the straight lines running the other way.

What a charming but beautiful quilt. This pattern is an original by C Jean Horst and is NOW available for our fellow-quilt makers!!! Please email cjh@amishcountryquilts.com if you would like information on purchasing the pattern or even the fabric kit. BUT for the many of you who have NO interest in sewing, it is available here as a finished quilt. It is a tumbling blocks that has 9 blocks of dark fabrics, 9 blocks of medium fabrics and 9 blocks of light fabrics grouped together to make each large block. A real interesting grouping of many batik fabrics are used to create each of the sides of the blocks. It was pieced by an Amish woman and quilted using 7 – 8 hand stitches per inch. A nicely arranged design.
