People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

Beautiful and delicate combination of fabrics and quilting designs! Notice the hand quilted butterflies and the special floral quilting design on the border. Background fabric is an ivory cream color. This quilt is extra special because it is was made by 3 generations. The quilt was arranged by young Mennonite quilt designer, Connie Lapp. The fabrics were selected and pieced by her 8 year old daughter who did a very good job. It was hand quilted by the grandmother who allowed the 8 year old to quilt with her (and you won’t be able to see the difference). A rare treasure!

The watercolor wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the background pattern and then more added bright batiks in hand appliqué for the butterflies on the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 8-9 exceptional stitches per inch and notice the theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the middle border AND the batik butterfly print in the outer border! This is certainly an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt.

Note the care taken with the complicated piecing, and the fantastic border fabrics. Both pieced and quilted by an Amish friend and signed and managed by C Jean Horst who designed and selected the fabrics and supplied an accurate pattern for sewing as well as oversaw the steps through the project.

Bargello quilts have been a joy to arrange for years because the blending of fabrics. This quilt has 20 fabrics from light to dark making a stunning arrangement and show of color. This quilt pattern referred to as Bargello Argyle is beautifully designed by Eileen Wright in her book More Twist-and-Turn Bargello Quilts by Martingale. Isn’t this Jacobean Appliqued Wall Hanging a stunning pattern! And the workmanship is just as pleasing. The hot pink of the flowers and the dark green of the leaves and base are featured in the border fabrics and the Flying Geese strips, making the whole a balanced unity. I love the curves of the stems that join the fanciful blooms! It has a sleeve for a hanging rod. The applique design was created by Pat Campbell which she calls Laurel Tree. This beauty would be so fun to sleep under. I can just recall as a kid needing to take afternoon naps and wishing for a quilt just like this to stir my artistic love of fabrics and colors while I tried NOT to fall asleep. But no such quilt was on my bed. The scrappy trip around the world is done in 10″ squares with each block containing 25 small squares per block. These patches are done in 100% cotton batiks and the quilt also has a batik double border and a beautiful backing on the underside. This pattern would also be great to make in Kaffe Fassett fabrics and that idea needs to be on my to do list too. Let’s see if that will happen.

This is a brand new quilt arranged by C Jean Horst that is so exquisite with its hundreds of yards of hand quilting thread – this one has 693 yards of hand quilting with 8-9 stitches per inch – roughly 200,000 stitches!!! It is exceptionally heavily hand quilted with feathers – large and small, and also a charming and beautiful heavily quilted border design. The cream background, even though it is a tiny tone on tone 100% quilter’s cotton print, shows up all the stitches and designs so nicely. While being a traditional patchwork pattern, Jean has transformed it into an heirloom quality quilt due to the exceptional yardage of hand quilting displayed.
