People from all over the world come to Lancaster Pennsylvania to purchase quilts made by Amish and Mennonite women. These Amish quilts with roots in many cultures are viewed today as quintessentially American. Most first time visitors are taken aback by the great variety of design and coloring, as well as the intricacy of quilts on display.
Not so obvious is the special way these quilts are produced. At a time when practically every textile product sold in America is made in Asia, these Amish quilts are made one at a time in people’s American homes. What’s more, these quilts are made using just the technology that was in common use 150 years ago. Because of the extensive handwork most women only take part in producing a couple of quilts each year.

A Fresh quilt from the book Simply Retro using classic blocks – the half square triangle. The concept of “retro” is pretty wonderful; it means “reminiscent of things past.” Isn’t that appropriate for quilting? Here C Jean Horst is using fresh, modern fabrics and it makes a traditional block feel “new” again. This quilt called Fresh is my favorite pattern from the book Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley. It includes 2 pieced and hand quilted Pillow Shams as shown in the photographs. The feather quilted circles in the quilt accent well with the straight line quilting designs through the blocks making it a very homey and cozy quilt for a good looking bedroom. Fabrics are all 100% quality cotton and the hand quilting has 8 – 9 stitches per inch. Looks great with little white pillow – not included. More pillows would be lovely.

Another new original C Jean Horst design. The reality of life being a journey seemed to come together when a friend’s husband passed away at an early age with cancer. The wall quilt – the Journey, was designed at that time. And now we have the full size quilts!! Available in queen and king size in this pattern done on a background of my favored Bargello Wave pattern design. This is a beauty of 24 100% quality cotton batiks used for the quilt and more bright batiks added to hand appliqué the butterflies onto the quilt top. It is a spectacular coming together of precise piecing, hand applique, and hand quilting. The hand quilting has 7 – 8 stitches per inch and has a theme of butterflies quilted into the quilting design on the border too. This is an heirloom piece – not your usual quilt.

Storm at Sea
$1,495C Jean Horst’s Storm at Sea Quilt vividly depicts the rolling waves of a stormy sea. Surprisingly, the illusion of waves is created by a few geometric shapes – squares, triangles, rectangles and diamonds. Here, C Jean Horst changed the 100 % cotton color pallet to emphasize different elements within the design which resulted in twinkling and stunning stars and wavy lines, creating a new look for an old design. This in an interesting old scriptural-based pattern taken from Mark 4:37-39 NIV where Jesus calms the Storm when he said “Quiet! Be still!” and the wind died down and it was completely calm. Lovely heirloom with the comforting connection to scripture. -

A lovely design with a great collection of 100% cotton batik style fabrics selected by C Jean Horst.. Very well pieced! Be sure to note the interesting quilting design done in the parchment background surrounding the diamond star. This pattern is so interesting because it is derived from the log cabin style quilt, but instead of beginning with the square in the center of each block, this quilt begins with a diamond for it’s center of each diamond block. Then the sizes of the strips that are sewn around the diamond are cut in two widths, a narrow side and a wider side. Imaculate and well done. A beautiful pattern making a statement of quality.

Classic design with lovely coloring. The background is a tone on tone cream white cotton print. The quilting design and the background print is slightly different on quilt available. Quilted by a Amish woman in her home and pieced by a Mennonite woman in Lancaster. This quilt is symmetric and may be used sideways on a king size bed. When making a quilt with leftover (scrappy) fabric , there is never another one exactly the same.
